M3GAN Was A Silly Good Time

2 Minutes

Last night I saw M3GAN in theaters and boy did it have me giggling.

Before I dive into my thoughts on M3GAN, let me get one thing out of the way first—I’m not qualified to be reviewing movies. So please don’t think of this as a “review.” Instead, I’m just going to talk about it as the amateur idiot that I am.

Anyway… I saw M3GAN last night with the expectation that it would be 80% horror/thriller and 20% ridiculous. Turns out I had that flipped. It was almost 90% silly and 10% scary, which is an amazing and difficult-to-balance combination for a movie.

As I was sitting in the theater, I tried to compare it to similar movies in that genre (as one does). The Scary Movie series came to mind, as did Freaky (featuring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton). I loved how those films used horror themes to create comedy, and M3GAN does this in a way that feels natural and fun. It’s campy, it knows it’s being ridiculous and doubling down on it, and most importantly, it’s making you think about future technology and the potential pitfalls that await.

It felt nice to joke about technology companies, artificial intelligence, and girl-sized robot dolls instead of being smothered with the usual existential dread that comes with a Black Mirror episode. If the past 20 years have been any indication of how rapidly technology can change our daily lives, the next 5-10 years are going to be pretty crazy. We do need to take it seriously, but I’ll leave that to the experts.

In the meantime, if you want a good laugh and a 90-minute distraction, go see M3GAN.

head home
