A Brief Thought On Luck

2 Minutes

I have this theory that there is no such thing as luck.

Let’s say every morning at 8:00am, you go on a walk around your neighborhood. Maybe you take the same path every morning, maybe you like to switch it up each day. But regardless, every morning you’re out there walking at 8:00am.

One day, during your walk, you look down and realize that you stepped on a $20 bill.

Wow! What great luck you have.

The next day, you walk the exact same path, you look down, and you realize you stepped in dog shit.

Ugh! What terrible luck you have.

There’s only one thing that’s the same in both of those stories—the fact that you showed up to walk at 8:00am in the morning.

If you “show up” every single day or every week or every month (the time period doesn’t matter), then you will inevitably have good days and bad days.

My theory is that eventually, everything balances out.

Maybe you have a lot of bad days in a row. Eventually, some good days have to come your way. As long as you keep showing up.

Life is complicated; it isn’t as simple as showing up to go on a walk every day.

But in some ways, it is that simple. In what ways are you “showing up” every day? In what ways are you not?

Another way to think of it is like this — how can I “show up” today to increase my chances of finding that $20 bill?

And then, once you figure out how to “show up,” tell yourself: there’s a good chance I might step in dog shit today.

When you set your expectations low, finding a $20 bill will be an amazing surprise, one that you can be genuinely thankful for.

And when you are genuinely thankful, it’s nearly impossible to be unhappy.

Because stepping in dog shit isn’t so bad when you have an extra $20 in your pocket.
