Do you ever think about all the weird obsessions people have?
I’m not talking about the usual ones like football or music or movies.
I’m talking about the strange, absurd, off the wall obsessions.
I’m talking about someone, somewhere in the world, who knows everything there is to know about, oh I don’t know, canned tuna. Someone who collects canned tuna cans and has a shrine built out of cans in their garage. Someone who knows the subtle flavor differences between StarKist and Bumble Bee tuna. Someone who knows 1,000 recipes that incorporate tuna. They love tuna, it’s their favorite thing in the world.
Now take that person obsessed with tuna and replace tuna with literally anything. Car doors. Shoe horns. Lightbulbs. Umbrellas. Fly swatters.
There’s people that have obsessions with those things too. It’s hard to believe that such people could exist, but I assure you, they do.
I remember when the show My Strange Addiction first aired on TLC. I was in high school, and even though it was deeply unsettling at times, it was fascinating. It made you question the bounds of human behavior. At times, we become so used to seeing the ordinary that we forget what the extraordinary looks like. Who can forget the guy who was in love with his car?
There are certainly healthy obsessions and unhealthy obsessions, so say what you will about My Strange Addiction exploiting people who potentially had unhealthy obsessions.
But it does make me wonder, do we choose things to get attached to or do the things choose us?
If I had to guess, I think the things choose us. I mean seriously, nobody grows up wanting to be obsessed with canned tuna. Somewhere along the way, it just happens. It could’ve been canned chicken, but it wasn’t. It was canned tuna. So it must mean something important.
So next time you show interest in something, regardless of what it might be, just go with it, and see where it takes you. Maybe it’s just me, but I love meeting people that have a passion for something, regardless of what it might be.
The world could use more weirdos with bizarre fascinations.
Or put more aptly by Maya Angelou: “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.”
