Prompt: You find yourself a part of a dragon's horde. They seem to like you.

“I can’t get over how cute he is!” Kaida said to Bazrosh.

“I don’t care how cute you think it is, we’re not keeping it in my lair,” Bazrosh barked back.

Wait… they can talk? Trembling, I glanced up at the two gigantic dragons staring down at me.

“Don’t worry little guy, you’re home now,” Kaida said to me as she pulled me closer to her body with her tail.

No, no, no, no, no. This can’t be happening. How did I end up here anyway?

Walking away, Bazrosh grunted, “Fine, you can do whatever you want with it. It just better not sh*t in my home.”

Kaida then tried to pet me, gently caressing her massive claws against my back, which felt like being massaged with a barbell. I figured my only way out of this was to try to communicate back to them.

With courage, I shouted up to her, “Hey, listen, you seem very sweet, but I think you made a mistake. I’m not actually a pet, I’m a human being.”

Kaida stared into my eyes, smiled, and said, “Awww, what are you trying to say little guy? Are you trying to speak to Mama?”

Oh no… they can’t understand me. How can I understand them but they can’t understand me? My heart dropped to my stomach.

Panicked, I tried to make a run for it. I hopped over Kaida’s tail and ran towards the wide opening at the far end of the lair.

Following me, Kaida snorted with laughter. “Does someone need to go pee-pee outside?” she said to me in a baby voice. “I suppose it is time for you to go out again,” she added.

In one swift movement, she picked me up by the back of my shirt, latched a solid iron collar around my neck, and placed me back on the ground near the opening. Nudging me forward, she said, “Ok, let’s go pee-pee.”

I nearly fell over as she yanked on the leash chain, nudging me towards the opening. I walked into the sunlight. I looked around and realized that we were at the base of a mountain with several other large openings cut into the side of the mountain.

I started jogging to keep up pace with Kaida’s enormous steps. As we walked, I peered into the other openings to see if other dragons dwelled there.

A slender, purple dragon stretched her neck out of one of the openings and shouted towards us, “Oh! My! Gosh! Look how cute. What are you going to name him?”

Kaida called back, “Oh thanks, Valisha! I think we’re going to name him Spanky.”

Suddenly, the ground shook underneath and a clamoring noise grew from the various openings. All at once, several other dragons exited their openings, gawking at me as Kaida and I passed by.

My jaw dropped. Because not only did the dragons exit their lairs, but one by one, several other humans with chains tied around their necks like a leash, exited the openings as well.

I felt a pang of hope grow in my chest.

I was not alone.
