People Watching On A Perfect Evening

1 Minute

A small toddler tumbles and giggles on the green astro turf. The sun is setting, painting a once blue sky shades of golden tangerine. I lick my ice cream, which is precariously balanced atop a crispy cake cone. All is well for a moment.

We don’t come here often, but the weather is perfect tonight. It’s 80 degrees, there’s a slight breeze, no humidity. Everyone had the same idea, the square is busy.

Surrounding us are several restaurants—offering Latin cuisine, standard American fare, high-end Italian, and more—all crammed together into a micro city.

I sit and wonder what it all means. All of these people, all together, at the same time, happy, enjoying each other’s company, or perhaps a good meal.

A woman sits with her dog, asking it questions the same way you would to a child. A man sits alone, staring up at the sky. I wonder what he’s thinking about. Meanwhile, another woman, maybe in her mid 60s and dressed very elegantly, walks past him, ready for an evening out. Families young and old chatter away as the night wears on.

“I could sit here and watch people all night,” my dad says to me.

“Same,” I respond.
