I’ve noticed an odd pattern over the past month.
For one reason or another, I seem unable to write anything satisfactory on Tuesdays. And alas, here we are, another Tuesday when I’m struggling to find a subject to write about.
Isn’t that strange? I tried to remember if I had been doing anything on previous Tuesdays that would have prevented me from writing anything of substance. Was I too tired? Was I too busy? I couldn’t pinpoint a cause.
So I did what anyone would do if they had to write something. I searched for writing prompts.
Following a quick Google search, I discovered a website called Reedsy Prompts. The entire site is devoted towards—you guessed it—writing prompts. It feels like I stumbled upon a goldmine. It’s hard to believe that it took me a full five months of writing every day to find this website.
In the past, I have frequented subreddits like r/WritingPrompts, but I often became bored with those writing prompts because they seemed overly fixated on supernatural and fantastical themes. While I don’t mind writing about dragons and aliens and vampires every once in a while, it’s neither my strong suit nor my interest.
What’s even better about Reedsy Prompts is that there are weekly writing contests. For example, the theme for this week’s contest is titled “Heard It Through The Grapevine.” They’ve selected five potential writing prompts that are all centered around gossip and rumors for you to choose from. One winner is selected and awarded $250.
I’m aware winning one of these contests is likely a longshot, but if I’m writing everyday anyway, I might as well give it a try. As I mentioned before, I am too tired to do any meaningful writing today, but I hope I can craft something for this contest at some point this week.
In the meantime, I’ll be thinking about gossip…
