I went to Antibes today. The back of my left calf got a little sunburned, but I didn’t mind because the skies were clear and a light breeze was blowing and the people were happy, which is exactly the way it should be in Antibes.
On the train ride there, I learned that Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel, the man behind the Eiffel Tower, also designed the steel framework for the Statue of Liberty. It’s hard to imagine that one man was responsible for creating two of the world’s most visited tourist attractions.
I read today about four children who survived forty days in the Colombian jungle after a plane crash. I thought about how Christianity uses the number forty to designate important time periods. The number comes up again and again in the Bible, and it is usually used to symbolize a period of testing, trial, and finally, triumph. Moses stayed on Mount Sinai for forty days and forty nights. Jesus fasted for forty days before his temptation. God flooded the Earth for forty days. Goliath taunted the Israelites for forty days until David defeated him. These are just a few examples. Was it a coincidence that those children were found after forty days? Maybe, probably. But their survival seems nothing short of a miracle.
